1. Clean the Filter
Modern dishwashers have a removable filter at the bottom of the tub. Food debris clogs it and dramatically reduces cleaning performance. Clean it every 2–3 months.
2. Check the Spray Arms
Spray arm holes get clogged with mineral deposits and food particles. Remove the spray arms and clear each hole with a toothpick.
3. Use Rinse Aid
Rinse aid dramatically improves cleaning and drying performance — especially in Toronto’s hard water. Refill it monthly.
4. Run Hot Water First
Turn on your kitchen tap and let it run hot before starting the dishwasher. This ensures the wash cycle begins with 120°F+ water.
5. Do Not Pre-Rinse (Really)
Modern detergents need food particles to grab onto. Pre-rinsing actually makes cleaning worse. Scrape plates, then load them.
6. Load Properly
Overloading blocks water and detergent flow. Face dirty sides toward the spray arms and leave space between items.
7. Check Water Temperature
Your home’s hot water heater should be set to at least 120°F (49°C) for effective dishwashing.
8. Descale Monthly
Run an empty cycle with a dishwasher cleaner or 2 cups of white vinegar monthly to remove hard-water scale and grease buildup.
